From Compliance to Capital: Cajun Flare Secures MEHKO Licensing and a $3,000 Grant with ICON CDC
ICON CDC’s South Valley BusinessSource Center provided structured technical assistance to support Chelsea Franklin, owner of Cajun Flare, in the establishment and formalization of her home-based Cajun cuisine business. Services began with enrollment and a comprehensive needs assessment, through which Ms. Franklin received guidance on legally operating from home via the MEHKO (Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations) program, along with a clear roadmap for business compliance and future growth.
ICON CDC provided hands-on assistance with business formation and regulatory requirements, including filing a DBA, obtaining a Seller’s Permit through the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, and completing the City of Los Angeles Business Tax Registration Certificate. The Business Specialist also supported the client with financial literacy and access-to-capital services, including grant application assistance, capital needs assessment, and expense tracking preparation.
The client was successfully enrolled in the COOK Academy, where she completed training on MEHKO regulations, food safety, pricing, operations, and marketing best practices. As a result of these services, the client completed the COOK Academy, secured a $3,000 microenterprise grant to support equipment purchases, permit fees, and marketing expenses, and opened a business bank account. She now has her permitted MEHKO license. The business has taken initial steps toward revenue generation through catering by registering as a county vendor and preparing for upcoming events. ICON CDC continues to provide ongoing technical assistance as the business transitions from planning to active operations and sustainable growth.
