Mandy’s Laundry Secures $120,000 in Grant Funding with Support from ICON CDC’s Business Survival Center
“ICON’s support gave us another opportunity to stay in business and continue serving the community. It didn’t just help a small business, it helped a community keep a service that’s well needed.”
Oscar Vazquez, Owner of Mandy’s Laundry
Mandy’s Laundry, a family owned laundromat in Van Nuys, received $120,000 in grant funding after working with ICON CDC’s Business Survival Center. Owners Oscar Vazquez and his wife had experienced a significant decline in business as ongoing construction near Van Nuys Boulevard and Sherman Way restricted access to their location. After months of declining revenue and depleted savings, the business was facing the possibility of closing or being sold.
Through the Business Survival Center, ICON CDC worked closely with Mandy’s Laundry to revisit the Metro grant opportunity, navigate the application process, and maintain communication with the Metro Fund. With the business facing an increasingly urgent situation, the application moved from submission to award in less than 10 days. Mandy’s Laundry was ultimately awarded two grants totaling $120,000.
The funding came at a critical moment. After the business received a notice to vacate, ICON CDC and Metro worked together to expedite the funding, with the grant check delivered directly to the landlord and the eviction stopped. The assistance gave Mandy’s Laundry an opportunity to remain open, recover from the impacts of construction, and continue providing an important service to the Van Nuys community.
For Oscar and his family, the support provided more than financial relief. It gave them another opportunity to continue the business they had spent five years building and renewed their ability to move forward.
