Myke’s Café: Cooking Success with Grants
Since 2011, Myke’s Café in Pacoima has been more than just a coffee shop—it’s been a neighborhood gathering place rooted in community and family. Founded by Rafael Andrade and inspired by his father’s legacy, the café quickly became a local favorite. But like many small businesses, it faced mounting challenges due to rising costs and economic uncertainty. Seeking solutions, Rafael turned to the North Valley BusinessSource Center (BSC) for expert guidance and funding support.
With help from a Senior Business Advisor, Rafael received tailored advice on managing costs, marketing, and boosting online engagement. Most critically, the BSC guided him through the Good Food Zones Micro Grant process, securing $25,000—$15,000 of which was disbursed in May 2025 to fund infrastructure upgrades, marketing efforts, and staff retention. Now focused on long-term growth, Rafael is preparing for loan readiness and expansion, supported by BSC workshops on procurement, sustainability, and local developments like the Van Nuys Metro Rail Project.
His participation in the RAMP program is helping him position Myke’s Café for even greater opportunities ahead. Reflecting on his journey, Rafael shares: “Myke’s Café isn’t just surviving—it’s thriving. Access to grant funding and expert guidance helped me believe in my vision again and invest in my community.” Rafael’s story proves that with access to grants, loans, and the right support network, small businesses can overcome even the toughest challenges and continue to serve as pillars in their communities.
