New Beginnings for Street Vendors in L.A. City Council District 1
On Sunday, May 18th, ICON CDC, in collaboration with Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, presented two brand-new sidewalk vending carts to local entrepreneurs in Council District 1. This milestone event highlights the city’s commitment to supporting legal street vending as a viable path toward financial independence for working-class Angelenos.
The vending carts were awarded to Maria Bueno of Mago’s Food and Snacks and Maribel Rios of Fruit Lebiram, marking a new chapter in their entrepreneurial journeys. Each vending cart was designed to meet the specific needs of the vendors and to comply with public health and safety standards. Maria received a fruit cart equipped with a refrigerator and handwashing sink, while Maribel was provided with a prepackaged fruit cart. Valued between $3,500 and $10,500, these carts were part of a broader initiative through the Los Angeles Economic Workforce Development Department that also includes vital business development support through the BusinessSource Center.
ICON CDC helped both vendors secure essential permits and licenses such as DBAs, Seller’s Permits, Food Handler Certificates, and more, ensuring they could launch and operate legally and sustainably. Beyond the business tools, the impact of this initiative is deeply personal. “This cart means everything to me and my family,” shared Maria Bueno, expressing her hopes for a brighter future. Maribel Rios echoed that sentiment, grateful for the opportunity to regain independence and support her family back in Mexico. With programs like this, ICON CDC continues to uplift small-scale entrepreneurs across Los Angeles, offering resources that transform street vending into a foundation for long-term success and community resilience.
