Sidewalk Vending Program - Cart Awardee Sandra Marilu Garcia of “Marilu’s Pupuseria”
Sandra Marilu Garcia’s love for cooking began at a young age in El Salvador, where her mother first taught her how to prepare family recipes. By the age of 10, she was helping in the kitchen, making tortillas to sell at the market, and just a few years later, she had already mastered a variety of traditional dishes. By 15, she was running her own small food business, selling meals from home and on the streets. That was an experience that gave her both confidence and a passion for entrepreneurship.
When life brought her to the United States, Sandra carried that same determination with her. She refined her skills by working in different restaurant kitchens, including a Salvadoran restaurant where she was able to stay connected to her roots. Although she faced challenges and periods of unemployment, her entrepreneurial spirit never faded. In 2020, Sandra decided it was time to return to her dream of running her own business and sharing the flavors of her homeland with her new community.
That is when Sandra connected with ICON CDC’s Sidewalk Vending Program. ICON’s team supported her step by step—helping her navigate the often overwhelming process of applying for licenses and permits, attending educational workshops, and gaining the tools to run her business legally and sustainably. Beyond technical assistance, ICON provided encouragement and mentorship, creating a space where Sandra felt empowered to turn her vision into reality.
Through ICON’s support and the SEED Grant Program, Sandra was able to purchase her very own grill push cart—a milestone that marks the beginning of her pupusa and Salvadoran antojito business. She has already begun serving her community with the rich flavors of El Salvador, while building the foundation for her long-term dream: opening a restaurant where people can not only enjoy authentic Salvadoran cuisine but also experience the warmth and traditions of her culture. With determination, motivation, and faith in God, Sandra is building more than just a business—she is creating a legacy for her family and her community. Her story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of having the right support at the right time.
